Message from Gurumurthy Kalyanaram, President

We are the MIT South Asian Alumni Association and our mission is to build community and celebrate our shared experience. This website is your gateway to activities and news for South Asian Alumni Association, a way to find out what your fellow alumni are doing and stay connected.

Check back here periodically as we update the site with new events, stories about volunteers and alumni, and information about ways to participate.

We look forward to growing and strengthening MIT SAAA and making the Association a vibrant body in the next two years.  The Association has grown in the last six years since its founding in 2006, and now it is time to bring a sense of coherence and purpose, and energy and enthusiasm.

After discussions within the board, it has become evident that for MIT SAAA to grow further we need wider participation by the members.  We also realize that decentralization and autonomy are important for this to happen.

There are three important elements that will increase the visibility and enhance the stature of MIT SAAA: one, strong programs and activities by MIT SAAA; two, a credible membership plan; and three, identifying opportunities to become integral part of MIT and contributing to MIT’s life.

With regard to programs, we want to encourage events in various places, but we want to send the information about the event to the entire list -- not so much to attract folks from New York to an event in New Delhi but as much to build a cohesive community

We request MIT SAAA members to take leadership and organize local events.  The MIT SAAA Board and Officers, and MIT Alumni/ae Office will be delighted to facilitate organization of such programs.  We would like to see programs in US, Europe, and all the member countries including Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka. We would like to encourage partnerships with MIT clubs and other professional organizations

So, please contact us and let us know how we can help you in forming a MIT SAAA group in your city and how we can help organize an event.

The purpose of events is to get-together, exchange notes, support each other, learn from and reflect on each other’s experiences, and form a purposeful community.  Accordingly, the events can be small or big, social or intellectual, informal or formal.

We should, and we will also develop a credible membership plan.  While each one of us – that is all the South Asian alumni/ae (almost 4,500 of us) – is an integral part of MIT SAAA, it will add to the sense of cohesion and purpose if we can also organize a paid membership.

Finally, we want to identify opportunities to be part of the MIT’s life and mission.  These opportunities are diverse such as: student-organized India Day or MIT’s next capital campaign or Lemelson’s innovation program or UROP or UPOP or undergraduate and graduate admissions and counseling.

Our goal is simple: to contribute productively, and to enjoy the company of and learn from each other.

I want to thank the membership for giving me an opportunity to lead the Association as its President, and thank in advance all the volunteers and officers for their generosity and contributions

Yours Sincerely,

Gurumurthy Kalyanaram (GK)
